SAFE Center provides accredited 40-hour initial classroom training program for SANE Nurses delivered in the state of Iowa. SANE accredited programs such as the ones offered through SAFE Center have allowed nurses to become eligible to sit for international SANE Certification. This course was developed according to the guidelines internationally recognized and established.
This educational activity was developed in alignment with the 2025 International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Education Guidelines. Following IAFN’s dissolution and organizational transition, these guidelines continue to be available through the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). Prior to IAFN dissolution, this training had previously been awarded the prestigious IAFN seal, which noted the highest standards recognizable in SANE education. Reference to these guidelines identifies the professional educational standards used in curriculum development and does not imply ENA approval, endorsement, accreditation, or sponsorship of this educational activity.

The purpose of this course is to educate nurses in the standards of Forensic Nursing and to ensure competent medical-legal forensic evaluation for all patients reporting sexual violence. Taking into account developmental, cultural, racial, ethnic, sexual and socioeconomic diversity. This course is intended for nurses interested in becoming a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). Requirements include RN or higher.
