The SAFE Center of Iowa is striving to be Iowa’s #1 SANE certified resource for sexual assault care, advocacy, and training. 

We're all about helping Iowans in need.

Clinical treatment and follow-up exams will reduce the rate of sexually transmitted infections. Onsite counseling will improve mental health outcomes, decrease the risk of suicide, and decrease likelihood of post-assault substance use disorders. Co-located sexual assault advocacy will provide access to supportive resources that improve client social and economic stability.

Meet our founder and executive director.

Shannon Knudsen, BSN, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P is the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Coordinator for both the Mid-Iowa Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and the Iowa State University/Story County SART. In her role, she coordinates collaborative care at each of the nine exam sites served by Mid- Iowa SART and two exam sites in Story County and develops policies and procedures and delivers training for SANEs.

With a nursing degree from Mercy College of Health Sciences and international certifications of SANE-A (for adults), SANE-P (for pediatrics), and as a Certified Forensic Nurse, Shannon brings extensive expertise in women’s health and forensic nursing to the state of Iowa. She has organized and led the 40-hour SANE training for aspiring SANEs and serves as a statewide technical advisor for sexual assault examiner programs through the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Abuse.

Shannon is also an adjunct assistant instructor at Des Moines University School of Medicine and a seasoned presenter. She has spoken at numerous conferences, including the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault’s statewide SART Summit, and trained law enforcement and military personnel. Additionally, she has contributed to educational programs at Drake University, Simpson College, and various high schools, and has been involved in training new SANEs through Iowa CASA and the University of Iowa.

Recognized for her expertise, Shannon frequently collaborates with community SARTs nationwide and provides expert witness testimony in court.

Ms. Knudsen was recently recognized by the Office of the United States Attorney in which she was presented the Victim Service Award for her exemplary efforts to bring justice to victims of crime.

Meet our director of development.

Olivia McAtee is the Director of Development for the S.A.F.E. Center of Iowa, where she leads fundraising efforts across grants, donor engagement, events, and strategic partnerships to support statewide, trauma-informed responses to sexual violence.

Prior to joining the S.A.F.E. Center, Olivia spent more than six years with the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, serving as an Investigator III in the Sexually Violent Predator Unit within the Statewide Prosecutions Section. In this role, she worked closely with prosecutors, forensic psychologists, and multidisciplinary partners on complex civil commitment cases under Iowa Chapter 229A, gaining extensive experience at the intersection of criminal justice, forensic psychology, and victim-centered systems.

Earlier in her career, Olivia worked in behavioral health and direct-service roles, including at Tanager Place and Friends of the Family Shelter, where she supported children, families, and individuals experiencing crisis.

Olivia brings strong nonprofit leadership experience through her service on the Boards of Directors for both the Iowa Organization for Victim Assistance (IOVA) and the S.A.F.E. Center of Iowa. At IOVA, she has held elected leadership roles including Treasurer and Co-Chair of the Credentialing Program, helping strengthen standards and sustainability for victim services across the state.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology with a concentration in Criminal Justice from Wartburg College and a Master of Science in Forensic Psychology from Arizona State University. Olivia is a Certified Victim Service Provider for the State of Iowa and a recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Service in Sexual Assault Response Award presented by Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird.

S.A.F.E. Center has a 12-member Board of Directors with diverse expertise in sexual assault survivor advocacy, law enforcement, crime lab/evidence management, criminal prosecution, hospital administration, nursing, and business administration.

Joseph Vivone

President

Attorney

Joseph serves as President for the S.A.F.E. Center of Iowa, bringing a strong background in law, business, and real estate. As a Corporate Real Estate Attorney in Des Moines, Joseph negotiates complex real estate transactions and advises clients on legal, regulatory, and compliance matters.

A graduate of Drake University Law School, Joseph earned his Juris Doctor with a Business Law Certificate and received several academic honors, including recognition on the President’s and CALI Lists. His professional experience also includes leadership in marketing and business development, having served as Director of Marketing and E-commerce for Berkwood Farms, where he helped expand the company’s brand internationally.

Passionate about community service, Joseph has volunteered with organizations such as Iowa Legal Aid, Variety – the Children’s Charity, and the Chrysalis Foundation. His decision to join the S.A.F.E. Center board is motivated by his awareness of how sexual assault affects countless individuals and families across Iowa. Through his expertise and empathy, Joseph aims to strengthen the Center’s mission of healing, advocacy, and education, helping create safer, more supportive communities for survivors statewide.

Angie Pfannkuch

President of Sidekick Development

Angie serves as Vice President of the S.A.F.E. Center of Iowa, bringing more than 20 years of experience in development services, construction, and land development. Through her work with Sidekick Development, Angie specializes in helping organizations turn complex project plans into reality, serving as a trusted owner’s representative for clients who may not have in-house development expertise.

Angie has worked with both public and private sector clients on projects ranging from $3 million to $100 million, providing strategic oversight, coordination, and problem-solving throughout the development process. Her background in management, sales, and marketing allows her to approach projects with both operational precision and long-term vision.

In addition to her professional work, Angie is deeply engaged in the community. She serves as Chair of the Zoning Board of Adjustment for the City of West Des Moines, is a member of the Invest DSM Board and Executive Committee, and chairs the Operation Downtown Executive Board. Her leadership and civic involvement reflect a strong commitment to community development and sustainable growth.

Angie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Management from Upper Iowa University and an Associate of Science in Sales and Marketing from AIB College of Business. She has been recognized as a Des Moines Business Record 40 Under 40 honoree.

Mike supervises the Crime Lab for the Iowa DCI. The DCI Crime Lab is responsible for the recognition, recovery, packaging, marketing, sealing, and analysis of physical evidence, preparation of technical reports of the analysis and court testimony. Laboratory staff also participate in the training of law enforcement officers in advanced evidence handling procedures and processing of some crime scenes.

Nate is a licensed real estate broker and co-owner of RentAmes Property Management, in Ames, Iowa. Nate’s experience includes both residential and commercial real estate management and property development in Ames and surrounding communities. Nate graduated from Iowa State University’s Ivy College of Business with a bachelor’s degree in business management.

Meggan Guns

Prosecuting Attorney (Major Violent Crimes and Sex Crimes)

Meggan is a seasoned prosecutor with 14 years of experience and serves as a prosecuting attorney in the Polk County Attorney’s office in Des Moines. Meggan prosecutes victim major offenses, including homicides, sex offenses, crimes against children, and other felonies. 

She also served on the drug and gang unit. Meggan is actively engaged in multiple metro work groups focused on protecting vulnerable victims from child neglect and human trafficking. Prior to joining the Polk County Attorney’s office, Meggan served in the Dallas County Attorney’s office for seven years where she prosecuted a wide range of crimes. Meggan began her career in private practice, and she also holds an MBA.

Maria Alonzo

Maria has been a victim counselor and advocate at Polk Crisis and Advocacy Services for the last 25 years. A native of Mexico, her experience in the antiviolence movement began during her undergraduate studies at a crisis center where she discovered her passion and the priceless impact of a collective voice.

In addition to her service on various boards, Maria served as a member of the Des Moines Public School Board since 2021 where she currently serves as Vice Chair. Maria has served on various boards and co-founded a non-profit community soccer program.

Sara McMillan

Sara McMillan is a licensed psychotherapist based in Des Moines, Iowa, with over 30 years of experience supporting individuals and families through trauma, crisis, and personal growth. She holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Counseling and Psychology from Drake University and is certified in EMDR therapy, trauma-sensitive yoga, and sexual abuse counseling. 

In addition to her private practice, Sara has long served as a counselor and advocate for violent crime survivors at Polk County Crisis and Advocacy Services. Combining clinical expertise with holistic approaches such as yoga and mindfulness, she helps clients build resilience and emotional balance. Sara’s work is grounded in compassion, empowerment, and a deep commitment to healing.

Jeri Babb

Jeri Babb (MSN, RN, CCRN, TCRN) held several leadership roles during her 45- year nursing career. She recently retired from MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center after 33 years of service. Immediately prior to retirement, Jeri served as Administrative Director of Emergency and Trauma Services with oversight of the adult and pediatric emergency/trauma departments. 

Jeri continues to serve as a consultant, special project manager, and educator for MercyOne. Jeri was awarded the Iowa Emergency Nurses Association’s (ENA) Career Achievement Award. Through her involvement with Iowa ENA, she held the offices of president, treasurer, member-at-large, and chaired many committees and workgroups.

Alice Wisner

Alice is an experienced analyst and higher education compliance professional with a strong background in fiscal analysis, law enforcement, and campus safety. She has served as a Fiscal Analyst for the Iowa Legislature and as a Crime Analyst for the West Des Moines Police Department. Most recently, she held the position of Clery Program Manager and Deputy Title IX Coordinator with the Iowa State University Police Department, where she oversaw compliance with federal safety and equity regulations. 

Alice earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University and her Master of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Alice is commitmented to data-driven decision-making, public service, and fostering safe, equitable communities. 

 

Mike Ferjak

Public Safety and Law Enforcement Professional

Mike is a seasoned public safety and law enforcement professional with over 40 years of experience in Illinois and Iowa, serving in roles from Patrol Officer to Police Chief. He holds a B.S. in Public Administration with a law enforcement emphasis and an M.A. in Criminal Justice. Mike was appointed by the Iowa Attorney General to lead several high-profile initiatives, including the Department of Justice’s Human Trafficking Enforcement & Prosecution Initiative, where he served until his retirement in 2016. 

Today, he operates I Know a Guy Training & Consulting, LLC, providing advanced investigative training for public safety professionals. A retired U.S. Army officer and active veteran volunteer, Mike is also a reading mentor for local students and a certified Kansas City Barbeque Society judge.

S.A.F.E. Center is working to expand its Advisory Board, bringing together subject-matter experts in healthcare, forensic nursing, behavioral health, victim advocacy, public health, legal systems, and community engagement to provide strategic guidance and ensure the Center’s work remains trauma-informed, evidence-based, and responsive to survivor and system needs across Iowa.

Dr. Dawn Bowker

Dawn Bowker (Ph.D., RN, ARNP-BC, CNE, SANE) is a nurse practitioner, educator, and researcher with over 40 years of nursing experience. Dr. Bowker is the Director of Nursing Education and Clinical Associate Professor of Nursing at Iowa State University.

Dr. Bowker obtained a Ph.D. in Nursing Science from New Mexico State University, a master’s degree in Transcultural Nursing and Community from Augsburg University in Minneapolis, and a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner with clinical experience in private and community sectors. Dr. Bowker is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and passionate about advocacy and public policy.

Kalen Knight

Forensic Nurse

Kalen Knight (RN, MSN, MBA, CEN, SANE-A, D-ABMDI) works for the Nebraska Department of Justice as the Liaison for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons. Kalen was previously a Forensic Nursing Specialist with the International Association of Forensic Nurses. He has extensive experience in clinical practice and education development from his prior professional experiences, including emergency, trauma, infectious disease, biocontainment/quarantine, nursing education, and forensic nursing.

In addition to his role with the IAFN, Kalen practices as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska as well as a Medicolegal Death Investigator for Pottawattamie County Medical Examiner’s Office in Iowa.

He earned his BSN From Clarkson College and his MSN and MBA from Nebraska Wesleyan University. He is a Certified Emergency Nurse, Certified Adult/Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, and a Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators. He additionally is an adjunct lecturer for the Masters in Forensic Nursing Programs Quality, Legal, Matters of Death Course and Clinical at Oakland University in Michigan. 

Katy Rasmussen

Katy Rasmussen (BSN, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P) serves as the Coordinator for the Johnson County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Iowa College of Nursing and holds certifications as both an Adult/Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE-A) and a Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE-P).
In addition to her role with SART, Katy works as a Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner at UnityPoint St. Luke’s Child Protection Center. She also practices as a registered nurse in the Surgical Neuro Intensive Care Unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
 
Katy is actively involved in education and outreach, guest lecturing at the University of Iowa on the role of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) and the medical forensic examination process. She also provides community education and testifies as an expert witness in cases involving strangulation.

Jessica Clayton

Jessica (RN, SANE-A, SANE-P, GFN-C) has more than 20 years of experience as a registered nurse and has worked as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) since 2013. She currently practices at a critical access hospital in Osage, Iowa, where she fulfills a wide range of clinical and leadership roles, including SANE Coordinator, Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Leader, and Medical Examiner I for Mitchell County.

Jessica earned her Registered Nurse degree in 2002 from Riverland Community College in Austin, Minnesota. Prior to relocating to Iowa, she worked in obstetrics and orthopedic trauma in both rural and urban healthcare settings in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Her forensic nursing experience includes more than four years at Hennepin County Medical Center, where she advanced from a forensic nurse to a SANE educator.

Since 2024, Jessica has served as a SANE mentor with the University of Minnesota Re:Lab, supporting education and professional development for forensic nurses. She is certified through the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) to conduct Domestic Violence Assessments.

Jessica founded the Mitchell County Coordinated Assault Response Team and Mitchell County Assault Response Team (A.R.T.), and serves on the Iowa Attorney General’s Advisory Community, reflecting her commitment to coordinated, survivor-centered systems of care. 

Dr. Katharine Pace

Dr. Katharine “Kate” Pace (DNP, PMHNP-BC) is a board-certified Psychiatric–Mental Health Nurse Practitioner dedicated to providing inclusive, compassionate, and evidence-based care that honors the whole person. She believes healing begins with connection, safety, and the experience of being truly seen, and she approaches each therapeutic relationship with warmth, respect, and genuine curiosity. Kate earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Iowa, where she received advanced clinical training in diagnostic assessment, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, group facilitation, and trauma-informed care.

With more than a decade of experience spanning emergency nursing, mental health care, group therapy, and education, Kate brings a grounded, patient-centered approach to her work. She integrates evidence-based medication management with psychotherapy and holistic strategies tailored to each individual’s needs. Her clinical interests include anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, identity exploration, and major life transitions, and she is especially passionate about helping individuals reconnect with their resilience, strengths, and sense of possibility.

A proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Kate is deeply committed to creating affirming care environments where identity is honored and diversity is celebrated. Her practice is shaped by cultural humility and trauma-informed principles, influenced in part by her clinical work on the Pine Ridge Reservation with the Lakota Sioux, where she gained a deeper understanding of intergenerational trauma and resilience. Kate has also been a strong voice in healthcare advocacy, previously serving as Director of Public Policy for the Iowa Nurses Association, where she led statewide initiatives to strengthen the nursing workforce, expand access to mental health care, and advance equity across healthcare systems.

We don't have a location yet, but your donations can help change that!

We’re in our initial phase right now, and we are fundraising to build our first location! Donations will help us fund and open the first SAFE Center Site in Des Moines, and will continue to help us with operating costs to keep the center running effectively.

Over time, SAFE Center also plans to provide services in geographically distributed locations throughout the state. Each SAFE Center location will respond to the unique needs of the region it serves. 2010 & 2014

SANE Nurse Coordinator - Polk

Founding Executive Director Shannon Knudsen is a statewide expert on SANE Nursing and has served as the SANE Nurse Program Coordinator in Polk County since 2010 and Story County since 2014.

2023

SAFE Center of Iowa Starts

In 2023, Shannon gathered a team of experts and created SAFE Center’s first Board of Directors. The Board included representation from the Attorney General’s crime victim services program, crisis intervention services, law enforcement, the DCI crime lab, prosecuting attorneys, hospital administration, and SANE Nursing experts.

SAFE Center will collaborate with donors and supporters to provide industry-leading training capabilities at SAFE Center’s Des Moines Metro location, positioning SAFE Center as the home for SANE Nurse training in the state. They plan to work in tandem to increase the number of SANE Nurses throughout Iowa.
