The SAFE Center has collaborated with organizations and departments across the state of Iowa to bring high-level training and education services to sexual assault examiners and response teams.

SANE Training & Other Multi-Disciplinary Professional Training

The SAFE Center provides an accredited 40-hour initial classroom training program for SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Nurses. Our SANE-accredited program meets the rigorous standards set by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation and by the Iowa Attorney General’s office associated code 915.

Beyond our foundational SANE training, the SAFE Center offers comprehensive in-person continuing education opportunities for professionals across multiple disciplines involved in sexual assault response. These trainings cover a wide range of critical topics, including multidisciplinary team collaboration, mock exams and hands-on simulation, proper evidence handling and documentation, trauma-informed interviewing techniques, and best practices in forensic nursing and victim advocacy.

Open to: Nurses Only The purpose of this course is to educate nurses in the standards of Forensic Nursing and to ensure competent medical-legal forensic evaluation for all patients reporting sexual violence. Taking into account developmental, cultural, racial, ethnic, sexual and socioeconomic diversity. This course is intended for nurses interested in becoming a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).
